5,142 Interior Roads to Get Rs 604.65 Crore Topping

CHENNAI: The City Corporation will splash the cash to relay 5,142 interior roads with bitumen and cement concrete topping after the council gave its nod for a Rs 604.65 crore package on Monday.

In a first, the civic body will be appointing Project Management Consultants (PMCs) for the interior roads project, months after it had experimented with PMCs for the first time while relaying 197 bus route roads. State agencies, Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd  (TNUIFSL) and Tamil Nadu Power Finance & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (TUFIDCO), have been asked to finance the project.

North and Central zones of the corporation, where as many as 1,548 roads measuring 272.96 km would be re-laid using bitumen/tar, would be done at a cost of Rs 189.22 crore.

In the South zone, 1,620 interior stretches of 293.60 km would  be re-laid and the cost of the project was pegged at Rs 221.02 crore.

An additional 1,974 roads in Zones 1 to 15 measuring 247.73 km would be re-laid using cement concrete. Cost of the project was pegged at Rs 194.41 crore. The Corporation would also appoint architects and design consultants to execute Amma Theatre projects, to come up in six locations across five zones in the city.

Consultants would be appointed for architectural services, structural integrity, interior design, acoustics and electrical work as the corporation was leaving no stone unturned to make Amma Theatres a success.

The theatres would come up at the lorry terminal on Basin Bridge Road, at the site of the old zone three office, next to SRM hospital in Ramapuram, on Kotturpuram TurnBulls Road and on Usman Road and Sivagnanam street in zone 10, where it would have multi-level parking facility and office complex.

A new park abutting the Korattur Thamarai Kulam would come up at a cost of Rs 1.99 crore. Another park in JJ Nagar West on EB Road would come up at a cost of Rs 1.54 crore.

A further Rs 4.93 crore would be spent towards maintenance of Kannikapuram playground on Brighton’s Road, Mugappair West Mangal Eri Park and the playground on Venkatanarayana Salai in Thyagaraya Nagar. A consultant would also be appointed to survey 93 spots in the city where the civic body intends to implement paid parking system.

The consultant would study vehicle traffic, revenue possibilities and report to the corporation for validating the project.
