CHENNAI:An attempt to break open the ATM of a nationalised bank at Anakaputhur near Pallavaram came to light on Wednesday night after one of the burglars fled on seeing a police patrol team.

According to sources, a patrol team was passing by Balaji Nagar when it noticed two street lights that were working the previous night did not function despite there being no power cut. As the team slowed down, a biker sped away from the ATM centre of State Bank of India (SBI) raising suspicion. When they checked on the ATM centre, they spotted a masked man trying to break open the cash tray using a crow bar. On seeing the cops, the man confessed that he and his accomplice had taken the two street lights out and also the one inside the ATM to avoid getting captured by the CCTV camera. He was arrested immediately.

The two were identified as Sarath (35) and John (30), residents of Balaji Nagar. John was waiting outside the ATM with the engine revving for Sarath to step out with the loot. But he got rattled at the sight of the patrol vehicle and sped away. However, he was arrested based on inputs from Sarath.
