Juveniles' Run from Borstal School Ends at 'Maari' Theatre

CHENNAI: Four of the 14 juveniles who escaped after tricking the borstal school warden two weeks ago were caught on Wednesday night while they were waiting to watch Dhanush’s latest movie Maari in a multiplex in the city .

According to police, Secretariat Colony Inspector M Ramasamy got a tip that the runaway juveniles had gathered at the multiplex located on 100 Ft Road near Ashok Pillar for the night show of Marri on Wednesday.

A special team in civvies was sent who managed to catch the four juveniles before they entered the cinema.

With the help of the relatives and others, police produced them before the Juvenile Justice Board and lodged them back in the borstal school.

Sources said the police team relied on the information that they managed to extract from local boys.

These local boys had overheard the friends of the escaped juveniles planning a get-together at Udhayam theatre which was showing Maari besides two other movies.

As many as 14 juveniles escaped from the Kelly’s Borstal School for Boys on July 17 and one of them was caught the next day.

Soon after the incident, the Secretariat Colony Police had sent out information to the respective jurisdiction police stations where the juvenile was booked for the offence. However, it helped secure only two of the escaped juveniles.

Three other juveniles were traced in a similar fashion by the City Police on July 26.

With the arrest of four other juveniles on Wednesday night, the City Police had managed to trace 10 of the 14 who managed to flee.

“We will be able to secure the rest of the gang as well. We have specific information about their movement from their rivals in the respective localities. We will have all of them lodged back in the Borstal School in a day or two,” said a senior police official privy to the investigation.
