CHENNAI: Bharathanatyam dancer Alarmel Valli will be receiving the M N Subramaniam Award for her excellence in performance, audience appeal, adherence to classicism, innovation, depth of knowledge and ability in dissemination of the knowledge, on March 6.
The award, which comes under the endowment instituted at the Music Academy by the family members of later M N Subramaniam, recognises an outstanding exponent of classical dance every year. Under the endowment, the dancer chosen is given the M N Subramaniam Endowment Cash and citation.
Alarmel Valli has been trained under Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai and his son Sri Subbaraya Pillai. Her dance style is lauded for being classical, while being contemporary and global at the same time. She trained in music under the eminent musician T Muktha. This helped her explore dance as visual music. in the field for four decades now, the dancer has helped create an international awareness of Indian classical dance.
Alarmel Valli will receive the award at the Music Academy on March 6. The event will be presided over by bharathanatyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, and will be followed by a dance recital by Alarmel Valli herself.
