'Education Sans Ethics is Empty'

Express News Service

CHENNAI: Medical education without ethics is not only empty, but also dangerous, said Dr Jayshree Mehta, president of the Medical Council of India.

“Doctors should not exploit patients’ ignorance and subject them to unnecessary investigations and surgeries. Temptation to make quick money is a serious issue in the profession,” said Dr Jayashree, delivering the convocation address at the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University recently. Students should have the capacity to question, while the institutions should have the commitment to inculcate moral ideals in them. “But unfortunately, our schools and colleges stuff students with information, but nothing to arouse their intellectual curiosity.

Hence, our country lags behind in basic scientific discoveries and technological inventions. Education has to build their character and make them better human beings,” she added. As many as 3,553 were awarded degrees and diplomas under the faculties of Medical, Dental, AYUSH and allied Health Science courses during the convocation. Among them, 39 were awarded endowment gold medals, nine received silver and 30 received TN Dr MGR Medical University (silver) medal. State Health Minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar and Governor K Rosaiah also participated in the convocation function.
