Express News Service

CHENNAI:  Deficiencies in the Anna Centenary Library in Kotturpuram, pointed out by the two-member committee appointed by the Madras High Court will be resolved within 30 days, TN government officials informed the Madras High Court, on Friday.

When the PIL from ST Manonmani of Poonamallee praying for proper maintenance and upgrading of the library came up before the first bench of SK Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana today, the committee members PT Asha and N Sundar, also advocates, filed their second additional report, pointing out what has been done and what is yet to be done. The TN School Education Secretary was present in the court.

The petitioner’s senior counsel, P Wilson, contended that certain key-posts continue to remain vacant. Books have not been updated, e-library and palm-leaf sections have not been created.

The latest compliance report filed today submitted that framing of ad hoc rules for the library-posts that have been sanctioned is being actively considered by the government. The Director of Public Libraries has submitted the proposal for upgrading books, creation of an e-library and palm-leaf sections and for renting out the auditorium, conference hall, seminar hall, amphitheatre and food court. The proposals are now being examined by the government.

Granting 30 more days to attend to the deficiencies and file a compliance report, the bench posted the matter for February 26.

If all aspects have not been addressed, the secretary should be present in the court on that day, the bench added.
