Satta panchayat chief roughed up for refusing to stand before judge

Express News Service

CHENNAI: Activists of the Satta Panchayat Iyakkam (SPI) staged a protest outside the Metropolitan Magistrate court in Saidapet on Monday after a group of advocates allegedly assaulted SPI President Siva Elango. Elango had appeared for a hearing in his ongoing case with the State Information Commission.

Elango claims that since he refused to stand before the magistrate he was assaulted. “I handed over the High Court order to the magistrate and told him that since there is no compulsion for me to stand during the hearings I will sit,” Elango told Express.

However, three advocates intervened and abused me for arguing with the magistrate. “After the hearing, when I was coming down the stairs, the three advocates assaulted me,” Elango claims.

Elango and SPI secretary Jai Ganesh then staged a protest outside the court following which the police pacified them.  “They promised that a case will be filed. But, after reaching Kotturpuram police station, they refuse to file the FIR,” Elango said.

The police, however, issued a Community Service Register (CSR) receipt, meant for non-cognizable offences.

Elango had come to limelight for protesting the former Chief Information Commissioner’s insistence on his ‘standing’ throughout the hearing. His sit-in protest had resulted in his arrest and sparked a protest by his supporters, who organised a ‘chair-lifting’ protest.
