Moulivakkam high-rise demolition leaves flat owners in distress

CHENNAI: Nearly two-and-a-half years after a high-rise at Moulivakkam came crashing down, questions loom whether the flat buyers will be compensated.

Kancheepuram collector R Gajalakshmi told reporters that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will take a decision on the land. She said that the apex court had directed the land be handed back to the developer after removing the debris.

When queried whether the government will take up the case of providing compensation to buyers, who were still paying instalments despite their dream homes not existing anymore, she refused to comment.

“The developer goes scot-free despite building a shoddy structure that took the lives of 61 workers. He will still get to enjoy the land. Is this justice?” questions one of the buyer. The buyers claim that they own the land under the undivided shares (UDS) of the building. 

The Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of  India on Wednesday said they will back the customers, who bought flats in the ill-fated buildings, to get compensation.
