CHENNAI: S Daswant, an accused in child rape and mother murder cases, was produced before a magistrate court in Mumbai, which granted three days’ custody of him to the Chennai police. According to the police, Daswant will be brought to Chennai by flight on Saturday night by a team of six policemen. Earlier, Daswant was produced before the Bandra Court in Mumbai, as he had been additionally charged under the IPC Section 224 (resisting arrest).

Daswant, who was facing trial in the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl child in February, went absconding on December 2, the day his mother was found killed in her house at Kundrathur on the outskirts of Chennai. He was arrested at a hide-out in Mumbai on Wednesday by Tamil Nadu police and next day he escaped.

Later, in a joint operation by the Mumbai and TN police, Daswant was nabbed again at a spot near a gambling centre in Kala Ghoda in Mumbai on Friday. “After he escaped from the police, he shaved his beard and cut his hair to hide his identity, but was identified and nabbed,” said a senior police officer. The officer also said that a detailed inquiry would be conducted and charges filed accordingly against him.
