CHENNAI: A high-level meeting scheduled for today (Tuesday) will decide the fate of 16 companies at the Japanese satellite township coming up near Mamallapuram, as these companies are seeking exemption from the Land Reforms Act conditions capping the maximum possible land holding.

Following requests from these companies coming up at 1,450-acre OneHub Chennai Integrated Township project (also known as Omega Japanese Satellite Township project) seeking exemption under Section 37-A to hold excess lands, a high-level meeting will be held with chairperson of Industrial Exemption Committee and Commissioner of Land Reforms on Tuesday, sources in the industries department told Express.

Tamil Nadu government has already sought remarks from the secretaries of agriculture, industries, and housing departments, Director of Town and Country Planning and executive vice-chairman of Industrial Guidance and Export Promotion Bureau over the matter, sources added.

The High Court of Madras, in 2002, had held that prior permission was mandatory for purchasing excess land. Following this, Amendment Act 23 of 2010 was passed to grant clearance to those who had purchased excess land without approval.

The case of OneHub Chennai and its related 16 companies which applied for grant of permission to hold excess land is being processed as per law before the Industrial Exemption Committee, sources said.

The agreement to set up the township was signed between Tamil Nadu industrial investment facilitating agency, the Guidance Bureau, Ascendas and a Japan consortium comprising Mizuho Corporate Bank, JGC Corporation, a programme management contractor and investment partner.

Leading Japanese companies including Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ajinomoto and Takasago are the first customers of project and have commenced development of their facilities.
