CHENNAI: A 28-year-old graduate was arrested for robbing people and raping women at knife-point, which he also videotapped in his mobile phone. However, so far only one complaint has been lodged and police are further probing the case. An investigation officer said that Arivalagan Madhan, a native of Krishnagiri, came to the city a few months ago in search of a job.
“Difficult to find one, he started waylaying people and robbed women at knife-point after which he allegedly raped them,” said the officer. Explaining his modus operandi, the police said, he targeted lone women at home and approached them on the pretext of seeking an address or asking for water. “Once he learns the women are alone, he makes his way inside and threatens them at knife-point and robs the valuables and then rapes the women which he videotapes in his phone,” added the officer.
Recently, Arivalagan snatched `8,500 from software engineer William, a resident of Velachery when he was returning home. “The incident was recorded in the CCTV footage of a showroom in the same street. Based on this, a complaint was registered with the Velachery police and a search was launched for the suspect.
During interrogation, police learnt his whereabouts and zeroed in on the suspect at his house situated in Maduvangarai near Guindy,” pointed the officer. Further investigation revealed that he hailed from Mathur in Krishnagiri district and completed his B.Sc maths at a private college in Krishnagiri. Later, he worked in a private company in Bengaluru, after which he came to the city. Police said that so far only one complaint of rape has been received and are yet to hear from others.
