CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has the lowest average household size of 3.9, which is the lowest average household size in India, according to a report of Tamil Nadu State Urban Housing and Habitat Policy.

The report, prepared by German Development Agency GIZ along with Housing and Urban Development Department, says that while the State’s urban population increased at a high rate of 27 per cent, the number of urban household size reduced from 4.31 in 2001 to 3.88 in 2011.

Currently, the country’s average urban household size is 4.66 in 2011. The report also states that the growth rate of urban households and growth rate of urban population has increased significantly over the last four decades from 4.4 basis points in 1971-81 to 14 basis points during 2001 to 2011, indicating decreasing trends in average household size in urban areas of Tamil Nadu.
