Chennai: Student returning after birthday bash dies in crash

A final year college student returning to city after celebrating his birthday at a resort at Kovalam on Wednesday died as the car in which he was travelling with others skidded on East Coast Road.

CHENNAI: A final year college student returning to city after celebrating his birthday at a resort at Kovalam on Wednesday died as the car in which he was travelling with others skidded on East Coast Road near Kanathur and rammed into an electric transformer on the roadside. 

Six persons, all undergraduates in various colleges in the city, had gone to the resort on Wednesday night to celebrate their friend Vigneshwaran’s birthday, which fell on Thursday, police said. “Around 11.30 in the night, they were headed to the city and moving near Kanathur when the driver lost control of the car while taking a sharp turn. The car hit the transformer and Vigneshwaran sustained head injuries and died on the spot,” said Inspector Shobana attached to traffic investigation wing.

The impact was such that a pillar of the transformer broke. The other five occupants escaped with injuries. Police identified them as Nithya Ganesh (21), who was driving the car, Narayanan (20), Vetri (21), Renix (21), and Balasubramani (20). Vigneshwaran was studying third year in Visual Communication in a college belonging to the SRM group of institutions.
