CHENNAI: During the inaugural ceremony of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre’s three-day conference which commenced on Friday, eight international faculty members were felicitated for their contributions.

The event which will be conducted until Sunday is an International Diabetes Update, organised by the centre every year to increase awareness and update knowledge on basic epidemics of diabetes. The conference was inaugurated by Former Governor of West Bengal and Bihar, Gopalkrishna Gandhi. He also conferred the fifth-lifetime contribution award to diabetologist Dr OP Gupta, patron of Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India(RSSI).

Dr Gupta congratulated Dr Mohan and his team for their unique approach towards clinical diabetology and for carrying research work without being affiliated to any academic institution. Gandhi who also inaugurated an updated version of the centre’s website spoke about the importance of checking a diabetic patient’s genetic history and the risk behind post-operation infection in diabetic patients. “Next year, 2019, is important as it will mark 150 years since insulin-producing cell clusters, islets of Langerhans were discovered in 1869. But only a combination of medications along with self-care will help in leading a healthy life,” he said.
