Chennai cops nab four persons for cheating bizman of Rs 1.75 crore

Crime inspector S Seetharaman has registered a case and arrested the four identified as V Praveen (32), L Balaji (41), K Selvaraj (47) and K Maruthachalam (37) of Neyveli.

CHENNAI: Four persons were arrested on Sunday for allegedly cheating a businessman of Rs 1.75 crore on the promise of getting a seat in a postgraduate course at a private medical college.A Jabarullah (65) of Nolambur, a businessman from Tirunelveli, settled in the city, wanted to enrol her daughter, an MBBS graduate, in a post-graduate course.

“Four men who approached Jabarullah with a promise to get a seat in the Master of Surgery course at a private medical university in Porur and received Rs 1.75 crore in two  instalments between May, 2017 and January 2018,” said a police officer. However, since they neither fulfilled their promise nor returned the money, Jabarullah lodged a complaint with the SRMC police.

Crime inspector S Seetharaman has registered a case and arrested the four identified as V Praveen (32), L Balaji (41), K Selvaraj (47) and K Maruthachalam (37) of Neyveli. They have been remanded in judicial custody, and a hunt is on for Chakravarthy, a middleman.

Meanwhile, Inspector Seetharaman on Monday was shifted to the Vacancy Reserve for allegedly handling the case on his own. Cases involving over Rs 50 lakh must be transferred to the Central Crime Branch for probe.
