Probiotic and prebiotic sodas: Do ‘gut-friendly’ drinks really improve digestive health?

Marketing claims outpace the science as experts warn that ‘gut-friendly’ sodas may not deliver the same benefits as clinically tested probiotics and fibres

Walk down the beverage aisle today and you’ll find sodas promising more than just refreshment; ‘probiotics’, ‘prebiotics’, ‘gut-friendly’, and ‘digestive health’ are everywhere. But do these drinks actually benefit your gut, or are we simply putting a health halo on soda? The answer depends on what’s in the can.

Probiotic sodas: Promising, but evidence is limited

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, may provide health benefits. There is evidence from meta-analyses that certain probiotics can help reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, an important distinction often gets lost in marketing: most of this evidence comes from specific probiotic supplements and capsules, not probiotic sodas.

For probiotic strains that survive processing, storage, and digestion, there are several plausible mechanisms. Certain strains of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces may support the gut barrier, influence immune function, and contribute to the production of beneficial metabolites, including Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. But this doesn’t mean a probiotic soda automatically delivers the same benefits as a clinically studied supplement.

If you’re considering a probiotic drink, check the label for:

  • A specific strain, rather than simply ‘live cultures’

  • A stated CFU (Colony-Forming Unit) count at expiry, not just at manufacture

  • Information about how the probiotic is protected or encapsulated

  • Appropriate storage instructions

The acidic, carbonated environment of many sodas can be challenging for some probiotic strains. Bacillus strains may have better survival characteristics in these conditions than some Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains.

Storage is another overlooked factor. Heat and prolonged unrefrigerated storage can affect the viability of live cultures. This means the number of organisms present when a product is manufactured may not necessarily be the number you consume. With quick-commerce delivery and warehouse storage, the cold chain can be another variable.

What about Kombucha?

Kombucha is also frequently marketed as a source of probiotics. However, simply saying ‘probiotic bacteria culture’ on a label doesn’t tell you which strains are present or how many viable organisms you’re consuming.

Kombucha may still have potential benefits from fermentation-derived compounds, including organic acids. But the presence of fermented ingredients shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as clinically proven probiotic benefits. In other words, fermented doesn’t necessarily mean probiotic, and probiotic doesn’t necessarily mean clinically effective.

Prebiotic sodas: A slightly different story

Prebiotics are substances, usually certain types of dietary fibre, that are utilised by beneficial microorganisms in the gut.Prebiotic sodas have a somewhat stronger evidence base than probiotic sodas. Ingredients like FOS (fructooligosaccharides) and inulin can support the growth and activity of certain gut bacteria, and research has linked prebiotic fibre intake with improvements in bowel regularity.

Unlike live bacteria, prebiotic fibre doesn’t need to remain alive, so refrigeration isn’t required for the fibre itself to function. However, more isn’t always better. If you have a sensitive gut, proceed slowly.

FOS and inulin are fermentable fibres and can be high-FODMAP. For people with IBS or other sensitivities, they may cause gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort or cramping, particularly when introduced suddenly. The same applies to suddenly increasing your overall fibre intake. Your gut may need time to adapt.

If you have IBS, follow a low-FODMAP diet, experience fructose malabsorption or have been advised to follow a low-residue diet, a prebiotic soda may not be the best choice for you. Sugar alcohols such as erythritol can also cause digestive symptoms in some people.

Children, pregnant, or breastfeeding individuals, people who are immunocompromised, and those recovering from gastrointestinal surgery, may need more individualised advice before using these products regularly.

A prebiotic soda can be a reasonable alternative to a conventional sugary soft drink, particularly when it contributes useful fibre. But it shouldn’t be viewed as a treatment for gut problems. And when it comes to probiotic sodas and kombucha, ‘contains probiotics’ is not the same as ‘proven to improve your gut health’.
