NEW DELHI: A property dealer was shot dead by an unidentified person in front of his wife in outer Delhi's Aman Vihar area, police said today.

Asharam (42) was shot dead yesterday around 8.30 PM at house-cum-office. His wife, who was fasting on the occasion of Karva Chauth and standing a few metres away, claimed a 25-year-old man wearing a yellow shirt shot him in the chest.

He was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where he was declared dead, a senior police officer said.

Asharam's family members claimed he didn't have any enmity with anyone but was one of the key witnesses in the murder case of one of his acquaintances who was shot dead last Diwali.

Their suspicion that he was killed because of being a key witness in that murder case has been ruled out by police.

"The area didn't have CCTV cameras so police are going by eyewitness accounts to get clues," the officer said.

While some people claimed that Asharam was a BJP worker, its leaders said he was neither a member nor an office-bearer of the party or its wings. However, he was associated with the activities of a "confederation" of the local BJP MP.
