NEW DELHI: In a bid to get battle-ready for Delhi assembly polls due in February 2025, the Congress has appointed Qazi Nizamuddin as the AICC in-charge of Delhi, replacing Deepak Babaria.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has also constituted a screening committee for the assembly polls, with S Meenakshi Natarajan as its chairperson and Imran Masood and Pradeep Narwal as members.
Kharge has appointed Nizamuddin as the AICC in-charge of Delhi with immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the party. The AICC in-charge, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president and all AICC secretaries in-charge of Delhi will be ex-officio members of the screening committee.
Delhi Congress sources said appointment of Nizamuddin is strategic as the party is focusing on assembly seats where minority population is dense. “In such seats, there are chances to win the majority of votes,” the source added.
Meanwhile, the party is carrying a city-wide ‘Dilli Nyay Yatra’, headed by its chief Devender Yadav, to rebuild its grass root connection with the public. The event draws inspiration from Rahul Gandhi’s nationwide Nyay Yatra.
Yadav launched the third phase of Congress’s Nyay Yatra from southwest Delhi’s Palam constituency last week. Trying to connect with people across the city ahead of Delhi assembly polls early next year, the party has so far covered 32 of 70 constituencies in the capital in two phases.
Meanwhile, the party on Monday attacked Arvind Kejriwal for announcing the extension of old-age pension scheme.
