For augmentation of the drinking water supply to Greater Hyderabad, the government plans to tap the Godavari and lay pipelines to carry the water to the capital. Accordingly, the government has established land acquisition units in Karimnagar, Medak and Rangareddy districts for acquiring and alienating lands.

Approximately, 1,491 hectares of land will be acquired for laying pipelines through these three districts. The State Government has issued orders on appointing 40-odd personnel for land acquisition exercise. They include 13 deputy tahilsadars, 12 revenue inspectors, 16 mandal deputy surveyors and some junior staff members.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is contemplating to augment supply of drinking water to Moulana Abdul Kalam Hyderabad Sujala Sravanthi Project from river Godavari with source at Yellampally Barrage under Godavari drinking water supply project Phase-I.

The alignment of pipeline will be along the State Highway No 1 with some cross-country reaches spanning across the districts of Karimnagar, Medak and Rangareddy for a length of 191 km and a 30- metre strip of land on either side of the highway was required for laying pipelines, thus needing acquisition of approximately a total area of 1,491 hectares for laying pipelines.

The managing director of HMSW&SB has been delegated with the statutory powers to approve the draft notification and draft declaration, PV and Award under the control of Special Collector, SRSP for notifying the lands under Moulana Abdul Kalam Hyderabad Sujala Sravanthi project, like in irrigation projects, so as to speed up the acquisition process and also to pay the remuneration and to draw salaries for the above staff on per acre basis similar to that adopted for irrigation projects
