HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Politburo has decided not to contest the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Elections (GHMC) but the party leadership will take a final decision at a meeting of the State Committee of the party here on Nov 2.

The TRS leadership took strong objection to the State Election Commission (SEC) issuing a notification on the GHMC elections though the High Court judgment on the matter was awaited.

The party also decided to intensify the statehood movement by supporting the party chief ’s decision to go on an indefinite fast in the last week of November.

The Politburo meeting was held under the chairmanship of party chief K Chandrasekhara Rao. After four hours of meeting the leadership decided to take a final decision on all the issues at the State Committee meeting.

Disclosing the Politburo decisions, Rao said that 95 per cent leaders opposed contesting the GHMC elections. The others wanted the party to contest just to expose non-Telangana parties. A final decision would be taken later, he said. Rao also criticised the SEC for not convening an all-party meeting before issuing the notification. The High Court would be delivering its judgment on the GHMC elections on Monday, he said and added that his party would decide on contesting the elections after considering the court judgment.

The TRS will launch a mass movement on the issue of assigned lands, particularly in the capital.

``Several assigned lands including Wakf lands are used for real estate business in the city. Even tanks were encroached by realtors. Imax, Padmalaya and several other film studios are using assigned lands for real estate business in the city,’’ he alleged and demanded that the government hand over all these lands to assignees without delay.

The TRS leader demanded an unconditional apology from Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal for making `derogatory remarks’ against his leadership. ``I am ready for an open debate on the language issue with the Congress MP but he should first tender an unconditional apology,’’ Rao said.

Politburo member S Madhusudana Chary appealed to all educational institutions in the Telangana region not to encourage singing of `Maa Telugu Talliki’ at regular assemblies.

The song was most objectionable to the region, he declared.
