HYDERABAD: Ayesha Rubina and Mohammad Ali Jameel have been elected unopposed as co-opted members of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) from the minorities category.

Soon after the election on Monday, which took hardly 15 minutes, the two members took oath in the presence of Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy.

Ayesha’s name was proposed by MIM Corporator Mirza Mustafa Baig and seconded by Congress Corporator M Parmeshwar Reddy while Jameel was proposed by Congress Corporator Singireddy Harishvardhan Reddy and seconded by MIM corporator Ghouse Pasha.

The Mayor informed that as per the HMC Act, the two co-opted members belonging to the minorities had to be elected within 60 days of the GHMC elections. The remaining three co-opted members from the general category would have to be elected within 90 days of the GHMC elections. A meeting was proposed to be held on February 8 to elect them.

The Telugu Desam party did not put up any candidate as it did not have adequate support in the council. Of the 150 members, Congress has 52 corporators, TDP 45, MIM 43, BJP 5, PRP 1, MBT 1 and remaining three are independent corporators.
