Special drives seem to be the flavour of the season for traffic police. After taking on erring autowallahs, wrong side driving and U-turn on flyovers, they will now start a week-long drive from Monday against signal jumping.

Police officials said there has been a rise in cases of motorists and heavy vehicle drivers not stopping even when the signal turns red. “The jumping of signal at stop line poses a grave danger to other motorists on the street and can cause serious accidents to the violator also,” additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand said.

Police said every motorist should stop when the signal turns amber and at no cost cross it after the signal turns red.

“A minimum fine of Rs 500 will be charged and the vehicle detained. Violators would be sent to the Traffic Training Institute at Goshamahal for a video-training session on traffic rules,” Anand said. Police said they would try to ensure that all stop lines are painted by Monday for clear visibility.

Meanwhile, the special drive against wrong side driving, taking U-turn on flyovers and driving on pavements, realised more than Rs 16.8 lakh penalty. The drive was started on November 8. Anand said 125 places were identified in 19 traffic police station limits, where such violations were taking place. 4,801 cases were booked against violators, according to Anand.
