HYDERABAD: Minister for information and public relations J Geeta Reddy called upon managements of all media houses to refrain from sensationalising news to gain television rating points (TRPs) as it would have a bad impact on the society.

She was speaking at the 30th annual celebrations of vernacular daily Prajashakti held here today.  She said that media, both print and electronic, have a great impact on people of all age groups.  In such a scenario, social responsibility of media becomes very important, she said.

Electronic media, she lamented, was exaggerating incidents and giving false information only to increase viewership. Every TV news channel is trying to capitalise on fear factor and gossips, she observed.

She opined that social responsibility of media has begun dwindling following investment in the sector by politicians. “Number of channels will definitely generate more jobs but on the flip side, the cutthroat competition will ruin journalistic values,” she said. CPM state secretary B V Raghavulu,  Prajashakti Book House editor Telakapalli Ravi, Prajashakti Sahiti Samstha chief V Krishnaiah were among those present.
