Unlike traditional mathematics, Vedic mathematics, offers several options to work out a calculation and cuts down the number of steps required to find a solution. The Andhra Mahila Sabha Arts and Science College, Osmania University organized a seminar on Vedic mathematics on Tuesday.
In Vedic Maths, almost all calculations go from left to right, which is opposite to conventional maths, where we calculate from right to left. This also creates an interest in the students. The key is to solve mathematics problems with pleasure and not with pressure.
Vedic maths is based on a set of 16 key formulae and some subsidiary formulae given in word form. These formulae, compiled between 1911 and 1918, help to calculate the way a human mind naturally functions, experts say.
“This concept is very useful for all students who are 16 years and above. It will help them for competitive exams, which involve a mathematics paper,” said Geetha, a speaker at the seminar. She also gave an example of how Vedic maths can be helpful for solving maths section in GMAT exams. “Vedic maths is know-how of mathematics as explained in the Vedas. It is also the how, when, where and why of mathematics. Once students learn it, it can help them to solve any maths problem,” says lecturer M Muthyam Reddy.
Students are now taking up these formulae to gain an edge over others in India’s highly competitive, exam-geared school system and dozens of colleges and schools have introduced supplementary Vedic maths lessons to help students. “It is something that speeds up problem solving and also helps to maintain accuracy. It saves time,” said P Kalpitha, student. Another student Ramakrishna said, “It is very useful for maths questions asked in banking entrances. It can be used for quick calculations.” Spoorthi said she was able to learn multiplication tables till 99 through Vedic maths.
