Chanchalguda jail road closed for vehicular traffic

Express News Service

The Chanchalguda Central Prison, famous for its high profile inmates including Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has moved one step ahead in terms of security measures.

The Hyderabad police on Tuesday issued orders for a permanent diversion of vehicular traffic around the prison premises.

Though the police officials describe the move as ‘general’ in nature, sources said that the move came after senior police officials undertook and studied a threat assessment of the high profile inmates.

Hyderabad police commissioner Anurag Sharma issued orders imposing restrictions stating that vehicular traffic would be permanently diverted from Dabeerpura to Saidabad through the newly-constructed road, behind the special prison for women.

With many notorious undertrials including top politicians, the move has come in as a shock for many who wonder if at all there are any new threats to the inmates.

B Sunil Kumar, IG Prisons (Hyderabad) when enquired about reasons for the new diversions, said, “It is not a sudden move. The proposal was made way back in 1993 and the discussion were on all these years, since the jail has always been under some threat, even from naxals.”

He further said the diversions are  permanent and the prisons department had given away its land for construction of new roads.

Some of the high profile inmates in the jail at present include YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his associates Vijay Sai Reddy and Sunil Reddy, former excise minister Mopidevi Venkataramana, former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law BV Srinivas Reddy, industrialist Nimmagada Prasad, suspended IAS officers BP Acharya, Y Srilakshmi etc.

According to the new instructions, vehicles coming from Saidabad proceeding towards Dabeerpura will have to take a left turn at Chanchalguda crossroads and again take a right turn at Mehraj Masjid, backside of the women’s prison.

Meanwhile, vehicular traffic from Nalgonda crossroads towards Dabeerpura will be forced to to take a right turn at Mehraj Masjid. And those vehicles coming from Dabeerpura will be compelled  to take a right turn at Chanchalguda Government Junior College and take left turn at Mehraj Masjid.
