New state DGP's first love is Physics

Vikram Sharma

His first love is physics. His eyes light up at the mere mention of the Big Bang Theory and his path-breaking experiments and theories, one of which was published in the international Journal of Applied Physics and Mathematics recently. He can go on endlessly if the topic of discussion is universe or astronomy.

But then, the scientist in him vanishes the moment he slips into his khaki uniform. He is none other than Bayyarapu Prasada Rao, a 1979 batch IPS officer, who was on Monday appointed incharge DGP of Andhra Pradesh following the retirement of incumbent V Dinesh Reddy.

Son of a police constable, Prasada Rao, in an exclusive interview with Express, talks about his fascination for physics and how he proposes to go about his task as the state police chief.

“I conducted research work on the Nature of Light and my paper titled ‘Interference and Diffraction’, a new theory, was published in the International Journal of Applied Physics and Mathematics. It is a path-breaking theory,” reveals a modest Prasada Rao. In short, Rao is helping unravel the mystery of the universe, much better than some of the best brains in the business across the globe.

He is, however, unsure whether he would get time to continue his experiments as he is heading the police force and at a time when uncertainity is prevailing  in the state with protests for an against Telangana.

Asked how he proposes to handle the protests, Prasada Rao replies: ‘’As long as protests are peaceful, there is no problem. Maintaining law and order will be my topmost priority.

The new state police chief further said that he would also fine tune his men to serve the people better. Welfare of the department will also be a priority, he added.

Born in Vijayawada, Prasada Rao talks about the qualities he imbibed from his father Srinivasa Rao, who worked as a police constable.

Prasada Rao, graduated from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada with distinction in B.Sc., (Physics) in 1975 followed by M.Sc. in physics from the IIT, Madras in 1977. He passed Indian Civil Services (IPS) in 1979. Eldest of the four siblings, he was an average student till Class VI.

Rao previously worked as SP of Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Nalgonda districts, DIG of Kurnool, Eluru ranges, Additional DGP (Law and Order), Vizag police commissioner, Additional DGP (Provisions and Logistics), Hyderabad police commissioner, vice chairman and MD of APSRTC and as director general of ACB, before taking over as incharge DGP. He won the Indian Police Medal and President’s police medal.

Prasada Rao conducted experiments on Wave Theory on nature of light from 1988-2011. He conducted workshops, delivered lectures and  presented papers at the Indian Science Congress in Bangalore and national conference on Spectro Physics in Chennai.
