Onam Celebrations Begin

HYDERABAD: Onam is round the corner and celebrations have already begun in the city. And more than a hundred people gathered at Mahendra Reddy Gardens, Medchal Road to mark the celebrations.

The largest festival in Kerala, Onam falls in the first month of Malayalam calendar, Chingam, which is September. Though it falls on September 8, celebrations begin ahead and last for ten days. Padma Shri Madhu, Malayali actor, who has acted in more than 500 films was the chief guest, while the guest of honour was NK Premchandran, member of parliament from Kollam constituency.

The show had a series of traditional and cultural programmes from Kerala, apart from distribution of scholarships followed by Onasadya.

Organised by the Nair Service Society, created for the upliftment of the community, the gathering saw people coming in from all walks of life.

Headquartered in Kottayam district Kerala, the organisation aims to promote cultural, educational and social well being of people of the society residing in Hyderabad.
