Express News Service

HYDERABAD: Gold smuggling cases at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) have gone up in the recent past. Customs officials, however, have started cracking the whip on the passengers who are involved in transporting the gold from various countries into the city.

On Wednesday, officials detained a passenger carrying at least three kg of gold in his garments. The passenger, who noticed officials taking up checks, threw the gold in a garbage bin.

“The gold, which was thrown in a dust bin in a washroom, was recovered. During questioning, the accused confessed that the gold was handed over to him by an unidentified person at the Muscat airport with a large commission,” sources said.

On Tuesday, officials seized 500 grams of gold from another passenger who arrived from Muscat. Officials have intensified investigation to unearth a fresh gang that is said to be smuggling gold.
