Eco-friendly Battery Designed by CSIR-IICT

HYDERABAD: Towards the goal of lighting every household in the country especially in the rural areas, a team of scientists from Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) have developed a battery which is cost-effective and safe.

Dr J Vatsala Rani and her team from Fluoro Organics Division have come up with a cost-effective, safe and rechargeable magnesium metal battery with natural graphite cathode that can be used in gadgets like UPS, inverter.

The battery developed by them contains magnesium (anode), modified natural graphite (cathode) and ionic liquid electrolyte, which are safe, eco-friendly and are easily available. The capacity of the cell is 5mAh at a voltage of approximately 2.0V vs Mg.

The cycle life of the battery is established for 800 to 900 cycles and the shelf life is estimated to be two-three years. The electrode materials are reusable and also biodegradable. It has the capability of substituting the lead acid battery.
