Five Injured in BDL Blast

The incident took place at around 10.30 a.m. in the morning. The officials maintained that it was an accidental explosion.

HYDERABAD: Five persons were injured in an explosion at Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) premises in Kanchanbagh area here on Saturday morning.

According to BDL, a defence PSU, the incident occurred when a small quantity of “waste explosives” went off while being disposed of , resulting in injuries to four persons there.

The incident took place at around 10.30 a.m. in the morning. The officials maintained that it was an accidental explosion. All the injured were being treated at  Apollo DRDO Hospital.

Condition of a casual employee, Naveen Goud, who suffered 90 percent burns, is critical while three others who sustained injuries were identified as SP Singh, a fire constable of CISF; Razak, driver with BDL; and BDL employee Wahab, the ACP said.

Another injured A Gopal Rao was discharged after first aid. Against the usual practice of dumping the waste into pit and covering it with an iron sheet and blasting it off from a distance, Saturday morning’s incident happened as they were dumping the waste explosive into the burning pit. It is not clear what lead to the accidental explosion as claimed by officials. A statement from BDL said: “a small quantity of ‘waste explosive’ while being disposed as a routine practice at burning pit in BDL premises Kanchanbagh, exploded on Saturday. Four workers injured. All affected being treated at “Apollo DRDO” Hospital. Best of treatment being given.”

It further said that the burning pit or the place incident took place was one kilometre away from production facilities. However, it did not state any cause for the explosion.

Deputy chief minister Mahmood Ali and other officials visited the injured and assured all help to them said that the government will ensure such mishaps do not take place in the future. CISF officials too visited the hospital.
