It is that time of the year, when students in schools and colleges will plan elaborate celebrations, when children will be thinking of what could be the best gift for their teachers, when young and old will reminisce and recall best teachers in their life.
Tomorrow is Teacher’s Day. On this occasion, Teach for India, the not-for-profit organisation that started in the year 2009, with an aim to bridge the gap in education, is hosting a celebratory evening for teachers. The event will see the participation of special guests contributing directly or indirectly to the education sector along with Teach for India fellows and alumni – a keynote speech, student performances and a panel discussion among other things are part of planned activities. The New Indian Express is the media partner for the event.
The organisation, which is part of the global Teach for All network, aims at empowering mainly under privileged children by placing promising graduates and professionals in low-income schools to teach full-time for two years. In the process, it also builds leaders who aim to eliminate the major gaps in the education sector.
Teach for India fellows are chosen from diverse backgrounds who are passionate and come from colleges and institutions like the IITs, IIMs, St Stephen’s College, St Xavier’s College, and leading companies like Accenture, IBM and the likes. It currently has its presence in seven cities in the country -- Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. It currently has 1,000 fellows placed in 330 schools and 1050 alumni members.
