Asaf Jahi-era Cannon Shifted to State Museum

Express News Service

HYDERABAD: The ancient cannon, which generated curiosity after it was unearthed at Hussaini Alam in Old City, belongs to the Asaf Jahi dynasty.

The artillery was shifted to the state archaeology and museums department at Gunfoundry in the city on Sunday where it will be cleansed and a detailed study taken up to know more about it such as to which year it belonged.

However, officials of the department said that there was no evidence to suggest that more such artillery or artefacts might be lying buried in the ground there.

In the early hours of Saturday, the 6-foot cannon was recovered at Hussaini Alam during the demolition of a house and  widening of a road.

Officials of the archaeology department took possession of the artillery on Sunday. A preliminary study was conducted to ascertain if some other artefacts lay buried there. The officials reached the site and inspected the site where it was unearthed. “The cannon belongs to the Asaf Jahi dynasty,” said an official of the archaeology department.

“But there is no evidence of other artefacts,” said NR Visalatchy, director of archaeology and museums.
