HYDERABAD: To help commuters get the latest information on road and traffic conditions, reduce risk in transportation, traffic accidents and to enhance communication and to respond during emergencies, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) will be implemented in Hyderabad soon.

The Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) a wing of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) would entrust the ITS related work (Rs 56.30 crore) to ARS T&TT (Netherlands). ITS facilities, being taken up with loan assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), gave its concurrence a few days ago.

ITS is a set of technologies that collates and disseminates real-time information for better traffic management in Greater Hyderabad. The chaos on city roads with vehicles inching at a snail’s pace and long traffic snarls is causing untold hardships, resulting in extended travel time and increased travel costs.
Road and traffic conditions on key stretches information would help ease congestion. With information available on road and traffic conditions, drivers will be able to plan their travel better. If there are jams prevailing on a stretch, they can delay their start or take an alternate route, HMDA officials said.

ITS is aimed  to increase efficiency in reaching destination, reduce travel time and travel costs, reduce air pollution and carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption. The concept includes closed circuit television cameras and Automatic Traffic Counter-cum-Classifier (ATCC) system installed on most of the key road stretches and probe data system in buses to generate live  real time understanding of road and traffic conditions in the city.

Under ITS, traffic signals, pedestrian signals, CCTVs, Variable Message Signs, Flood sensors, Weather Stations, Pollution Sensors, Probe car system have been proposed.

VMS would be a key component of the ITS project. The VMS will help a driver understand what lies ahead for him, whether the road has smooth traffic flow or is dug up or there is a jam.

A Command Control Center would be established at ORR Nanakramguda Interchange. It will collect all the road, traffic data and provided to the users and relevant agencies.
