HYDERABAD: Controversy surrounded the death of a 32-year-old man, who died after being summoned to the Begumpet police station for his alleged involvement in a theft case, with his family claiming that he died of police blows.

The incident took place in Bangla Venkatapur of Begumpet police limits in Gajwel, the constituency represented by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

According to family members, M Swamy had been summoned to the police station at least twice in the last three months for his alleged involvement in a theft case. Five days back, Swamy was asked to come to the police station once again where he was allegedly beaten up by the police ‘as part of interrogation’ and was let off.

Swamy, who fell ill later, was shifted to a hospital this week. As his condition worsened, Swamy was shifted to Gandhi General Hospital in Hyderabad where he succumbed to injuries on Saturday.

The family members took Swamy's body to their village and staged protests demanding action against the police personnel responsible for the death.
