HYDERABAD: In the wake of recent developments on the University of Hyderabad campus, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad has demanded installation of a national flag and a wall of Martyrs to evoke a sense of patriotism among students.
The university and ABVP have been involved in a face off since July 27 when security officials removed a temperory memorial the students had placed in memory of martyrs on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Outraged with the administration, ABVP constructed a permanent memorial overnight, against the varsity’s rules.
The University, in the meantime, issued another circular stating that students involved in the fiasco will be penalised. However, students haven’t got any individual notices for disciplinary action.
Worried at the lack of nationalism being exhibited by students and staff on the campus, students body has proposed these two demands to the UoH administration, after it carried out a protest march from the South Campus, which it has renamed as Kargil Chowk, to the North campus, here on Monday.
The activist said incidents of rising intolerance against nationalism provoked them to lay such demands. “This has not just stemmed from the removal of the Amar Jawan Stupa. Similar acts of intolerance have been witnessed in NIT Srinagar and JNU, Delhi,” said the student leader.
ABVP has planned a series of events involving talks and awareness activities to instil patriotism among students. Its members are also engaged in talks with fellow students about the ‘anti-national programmes’ that are regularly conducted at the Central University.
