HYDERABAD: Twenty-three-year-old Saira Banu is relieved with the Supreme Court verdict. She dropped out of college after she fell in love with Omar and got married to him. The couple had a daughter and Saira left for Saudi Arabia to earn and provide a better life for her child. “Just before I left, Omar gave me talaq, promising to remarry me on my return,” rued the woman based in Hyderabad. Saira returned later to India, but her husband did not want her back.

“After I left, Omar told my relatives that I had given him khula (divorce pronounced by the wife).”   “Had my family not been so supportive, everything would have ended. Now, I am continuing my education and have left the triple talaq episode far behind,” said Saira.

Zehra Fatima, on the other hand, refuses to even recall the ordeal she underwent leading to her instant talaq. The 27-year-old said she finds taking care of her child extremely difficult in the absence of any support from her ex-husband. “My husband used to assault me everyday.

To escape the torture, I went to my mother’s home for a few days. He then shocked me with triple talaq. I was asked to collect divorce papers directly from a qazi,” said Fatima.Zehra Fatima wonders why no one wants to compensate or ensure employment to women who suffer talaq. “Legal representatives did not assure any help in securing alimony. I have lost faith in judiciary.”
