HYDERABAD: House surgeons at Osmania General Hospital boycotted emergency and elective medical services at the hospital on Friday protesting against non-payment of pending stipend to them. However, medical services were not affected except in the casualty department where the work load was delegated to nurses and first year PG students. A total of 200 house surgeons work at OGH and seven other hospitals attached to it, such as Institute of Mental Health.

Superintendent of hospital Dr B Nagender said they posted PG students, senior resident doctors in casualty and other departments. “We informed them their stipends were cleared and they will receive the dues for eight months on Monday. However, the house surgeons chose to go on strike,” he said.

The house surgeons are supposed to get a stipend of `12,167 every month. “However, we did not receive the stipend from the past eight months. We started our internship in April. Besides this, we prepare for PG entrance tests and we have to buy study material,” said a house surgeon on condition of anonymity.
