HYDERABAD: With the proposed logistic parks (truck terminals) at Mangalapally and Batasingaram on the city’s outskirts to materialise soon, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has drawn plans to establish another four such logistic parks along national highways on the outskirts of the city.

The state government has already given the green signal for a logistic park at Batasingaram in Hayatnagar mandal on the Vijayawada highway and 7 km from the Outer Ring Road (ORR), and another at Mangalapally in Ibrahimpatnam mandal on the Nagarjunasagar road and close to ORR. The works on them will begin shortly.

The Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS), conducted by HMDA for the metropolitan area, suggested the need for establishing some more logistic parks to meet the increasing infrastructure demand for freight logistics. Hence the plan for for four more.

HMDA metropolitan commissioner T Chiranjeevulu says that a detailed study will be carried out and, if possible, the four new terminals will be grounded this year itself in view of the demand for logistic parks on these national highways. These locations will have adequate area, facilities, accessibility and proper land use breakup. The proposed parks will be developed in public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

An efficient goods transport movement system is critical to the economy of huge urban area such as the HMDA. The Hydderabad Metropiltan Area region is also well connected by rail and road to the rest of the state and country. Moreover, the Hyderabad region is home to a number of industrial growth centres which generate considerable goods movement.

Estimates suggest that more than 35,000 to 40,000 freight vehicles carry around one lakh tonnes of cargo in and out of the city. These parks will offer integrated facilities for truck parking, warehousing and replete with dhabas, cafeterias and restaurants, truck workshops, petrol pumps and weigh bridges, etc.
The economic and physical characteristics of goods transportation, parking, loading and unloading, etc. lead to special and often complex issues in accommodating truck operations.

The planned parks would have parking space for about 500 to 800 trucks, warehousing in 1 lakh sq.ft, cold rooms for storing 5,000 MT of goods, office complex for operators, automobile service centres and accessories, vehicle testing centre, fire safety services, driver amenities, dormitories and accommodation for up to 300 persons.

They would also have support facilities like internal road network, parking areas with hard pavement to sustain truck, trailer loads, security, water supply, noise and air pollution prevention arrangements, rain-water harvesting, sewage treatment, solid waste management, landscaping and other services.
