Gandhi hospital case: Parents of sick children allege they picked up drugs from paediatric ward

HYDERABAD: A few parents of children who fell sick after antibiotics were administered to them at Gandhi hospital, said that they had collected the drug vials from trays in the pediatric ward. After the children developed chills and fever, a few of the family members got agitated, collected the vials and submitted it to the hospital’s administration alleging that expired drugs were administered to the children.

The parents on Monday too claimed that some of the drug vials have crossed expiry date. However, none of them were sure if the same vials which they collected from the trays were administered to their children.

Some of the drug vials produced by them crossed expiry date, some did not, and some of them did not bear the stamp ‘TS Govt Supply Not For Sale’-which indicated that it was supplied by government departments and not bought from outside.  

Superintendent of the hospital Dr P Shravan Kumar said that they are allowed to buy 20 percent of medicines from notified medical shops. A few doctors said at times they buy drugs from outside when they run out of stock and need them on emergency basis to avoid the situation where they cannot offer treatment because of lack of medicines.
