Metro Rail depots to have recharging pits

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail depots will feature a rainwater harvesting mechanism that will take advantage of the monsoon season in the city.   The mechanism will feature recharging pits at depots and stations along the 72 kilometre stretch of the Phase 1 project. Injection systems, a mechanism to absorb water at a higher level, are at a place to take increase absorption water during a rainfall spell, said an HMRL official. At present, HMRL has built 28 water harvesting pits in Uppal and 15 in Miyapur which will be in addition to four water harvesting pits at each station.

“We have estimated to have a total consumption of 1,00,000 cubic meters per annum for various washing, plantation, landscaping and other miscellaneous activities,” said BN Rajeshwar, General Manager (W), HMRL. According to him, all needs will be met through the rainwater harvesting process by tapping the average rainfall of 810 mm of rainfall during sixty-seventy days of rainfall during a monsoon season. “The metro stations will also have such pits that will be useful in generating water for maintenance purposes. Water pumping machines on the parallel will be used to draw water,” said Rajeshwar.
