HYDERABAD: Residents of Ramachandrapuram (RC Puram), which is located by National Highway 65, are clueless whether someone from their locality would be hit by a speeding vehicle on the main road. With neither anyone to monitor the speeding lorries and cars along the highway nor any presence of a pelican or traffic signal, the residents, schoolchildren and senior citizens are forced to put their life at risk while crossing the main road.
Residents of colonies from Malikarjun Nagar, Sai Nagar and Ashok Nagar are the worst hit. “My own grandmother got hit by a speeding truck recently and was injured. It gets worse during the night when the visibility is poor,” said MV Manoj, a resident of Sai Nagar Colony. There is a need for a traffic signal here and paint pedestrian crossing lines on the road while asking for deployment of a traffic constable, he added.
Speaking to Express, the corporator T Anjaiah said that measures are being taken to tackle the issue.”Proposals sent to GHMC to build two Foot over Bridges (FoBs) in Malikarjuna Nagar and Ashok Nagar. Once that is sanctioned, the schoolchildren can use it and cross the highway,” said Anjaiah.
The corporation, which was recently included into the municipality fold from the gram panchayat, has also been facing issues bad roads crippling the colonies. While the main roads in the colonies are laid, the sub-roads and auxiliary roads are yet to see the signs of development.
“We used to pay Rs 500 as property tax, which has increased by ten fold, but still there are no proper roads in bylanes. We, ourselves, get the road repair works done as the corporation does take any action,” alleged Shaik Abdul Ghani, a resident of Srinivas Nagar. Even recarpeting of the roads after installation of underground drainage pipelines are pending in most of the places in the ward. The problem is so much so that the road in front of the Tehsildar office is also filled with potholes.
