KOCHI: A workshop on 'Cartoons and microeconomics' began at the Department of Economics, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, on Tuesday.

D Rajasenan, director, International Centre for Economic Policy and Analysis (ICPEA), Cusat, inaugurated the workshop.

The workshop aims at expressing the complicated higherlevel applications of economics through cartoons.

For this, the cartoonists were taught economic theories through an interaction with the teachers.

The tools will help students as well as the common people in understanding the complicated theories of microeconomics.

"Though cartoons have immense opportunity as teaching and learning aides in economics, they have not penetrated beyond the realm of politics and society. The workshop has been designed to use cartoons as a teaching aid in the context of microeconomics," Rajasenan said.

"The interaction between the teachers and cartoonists like Balachandran, Prasannan Anickad, B Sajjive, Harikumar and Sathyadev is expected to bring forth a few cartoons during the workshop. It has been planned to release a book on the outcome of the workshop," S Muraleedharan, professor, Department of Economics, Maharaja's College, said.

The workshop will handle microeconomic theories, including the theory of demand, production function, perfect markets, competition and monopoly, Ricardo's theory of rent and capital market, information asymmetry and health economics.

Each cartoonist will be given a theory to be presented as a cartoon and it will be completed on November 9.

General convener and governing body member, Ernakulam Cluster of Colleges, M L Prakash, gave the welcome speech.

M S Viswambaran presided over the function. Faculty members S Muraleedharan, Mothi George and Sunil Kumar, cartoonist Balachandran, viceprincipal Mary Mattilda, college chairman Jino John and secretary Anees spoke.
