The side-splitting play ‘Rafta Rafta’, that brings to the fore the frets and frails of cross cultural families, has always won plaudits for its portrayal of NRI Indians, wherever it has been staged. The theatre lovers of Kochi will be getting a rare chance to witness the play at JTPac this Sunday at 7 pm.

The play that was written by British-Pakistani playwright Ayub Khan-Din years ago has been directed by Tahira Nath and Akarsh Khurana jointly.

Akarsh who also produces and acts in the play says, “‘Rafta, Rafta’ is a fun play that discusses topics like the cultural differences that desis settled abroad have to face. Issues relating to marriage, the widening generation gap between second generation Indians and their children all find a place in the play. It depicts elaborately what happens when a mishmash of people, different in every sense, live together under a single roof.”

Though basically an English play, a bit of Hindi and Punjabi have been woven into the dialogues for authenticity.

Narrating the storyline of the play, Akarsh says, “Indian weddings are always eventful and opulent. The play revolves around a family  that has been settled in Britain for years. Marital tiffs and the subsequent hullabaloo that follows is the crux of the play.”

Problems arise when Atul Dutt, and his new bride, Lisa Lim plan to live with Atul’s family. A series of rollicking events take place. The couple gets exasperated on their wedding night, seeing how much Atul’s parents overindulge them.

Meanwhile, the groom’s brother suddenly develops a crush on his brother’s pretty wife. To add to the chaos, Atul’s father Eeshwar Dutt, who is boisterous by nature begins to have a tug of war with his son.

Soon the nuptial becomes truly eventful with a series of happenings. Six weeks post marriage, the couple starts to face real difficulties and Lisa is on the verge of leaving the Dutt family home entirely.

The play stars Abir Abrar, Kshitee Jog, Ahlam Khan Karachiwala, Adhaar Khurana, Akarsh Khurana, Faisal Rashid and others.
