Providing a major relief to the local residents at Tripunithura who mainly depend on General Hospital in Kochi for various surgeries, the Tripunithura Municipality will set up a new operation theatre complex (OTC) at the Taluk Hospital within a month.
The proposed theatre complex comprises two operation theatres and a labour room.
Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal said the total cost of the project was Rs 80 lakh.
“The funds for the project has be allocated from MP fund of Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi. BPCL Kochi Refinery has also funded the project,” he said.
Tripunithura Taluk Hospital superintendent Mani Yogidas said the District Medical Office recently deputed four new nursing staffs for the functioning of the operation theatre complex. “The present theatre is small and the facilities for conducting surgeries are limited. The new theatre complex will be helpful for attending more cases. We already have the service of two surgeons. Now, four nursing staffs has been allotted,” she said.
She added that the work on operation theatre complex has been completed.
“Now, a generator needs to be installed for the operation theatre complex. This is sponsored by the Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited. The official inauguration of the OTC will be done by Excise Minister K Babu. Tripunithura Municipal chairman R Venugopal will preside over the function,” she said.
Meanwhile, senior surgeon C V Jose said the new theatre complex is equipped with advanced machines. “As the new operation theatre complex will have all the modern facilities, including centralized oxygen system, multiple surgeries can be conducted here,” he said.
He added that the new OTC is attached to the labour room. “In some cases, C-section is scheduled at last minute and the woman has to be shifted to the theatre. Now, since the labour room is attached to the theatre, the risk is less,” he said.
