The Jew Street in Mattanchery traces the historical role played by the Jews and of their prosperous spice trade. The Jews were instrumental in turning the place into a  trade hub. Though most of them left Mattanchery long ago, their presence is felt through a few senior citizens and their memories.

“The Jews observed a unique belief and way of life. But they were totally integrated to the social fabric of Mattanchery. They were part and parcel of the city’s important milestones. I have witnessed the decline of Mattanchery as a trade hub and decline of Jewish presence,” said Naveen, who works in a spices godown.

Tourists who are interested in heritage and culture visit Mattanchery. Kirit Shah, a tourist guide in Matatnchery of Gujarathi origin, pointed out that Jews from several parts of the world come all the way to Mattanchery to see the relics of a vibrant Jewish culture. “For some of them, it is a emotional journey to find the roots of their own family and they spend a long time in Mattanchery,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Jewish community is facing problems due to the dwindling population.

According to custom, the presence of 10 male members aged above 13 years is a must to conduct the prayer service. “But now we are short of members,” said a senior member of the Jewish community.
