Jail food set to score high

Apart from the star cricketers, the chappathi and chicken curry from the kitchens of the jail will be vying for attention during the One Day International Cricket match between India and West Indies at Jawaharlal Nehru International stadium on November 21.

The jail authorities have decided to supply food prepared by the jail inmates for the event.

They said that 10 stalls would be opened at the stadium and the food items can be had at reasonable rates.

According to officials in the Prison Department, it has been decided to supply food prepared at the Viyyur Central Jail and Kakkanad District Jail at the stalls at Kaloor stadium during the match. “Ten stalls will be put up at the stadium and we have identified  the spots. The people coming for the match can have biriyani, chappathi, chicken curry, vegetable curry, egg curry and snacks  prepared by the inmates. Biriyani will be priced at `65, a packet of five chappathis will cost `10, chicken curry, `25 and vegetable and egg curry will be available at `10,” an official said.

 M K Vinod Kumar, Superintendent of Viyyur Central Jail and welfare officer Santhosh T; Sudheer, Superintendent of the Kakkanad jail and welfare officer Thomas visited the stadium and identified the locations. The officials have decided to keep the stalls open for the entire day.

 “Depending on the demand for the food during the match, jail officials will be informed whether more food has to be prepared. We are also thinking of supplying tea and coffee during the match. Officials from Viyyur and Kakkanad jail will be present at stalls to monitor the food and sale,” the official said.   During Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s mass contact programme, chappatis and curry from the jail worth `70,000 were sold on a single day.
