A A Kochunni Master, the first mayor of the city, was remembered by an array of politicians and public servants at a function held here on Saturday on the occasion of his 6th death anniversary.
“Kochunni had fought against the degradation of values and ethics taking place in politics. In today’s era, virtue has disappeared from politics,” said Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran.
“Degradation of ethics is a prominent issue plaguing politics today. Kochunni was a great man who stood for the common man and spoke against the downfall of ethics in society. He was a true follower of Gandhian policies and lived his life as a socialist,” Ramachandran said.
“The master is a role model to many as he never faltered, even in the years of adversities. He was a follower of Sree Narayana Guru. However, it is a little known fact that he was also a member of the SNDP Yogam. Despite his hectic schedule, Kochunni used to find time to read. He had great in depth knowledge of epics. He also took keen interest in social and educational issues,” Ramachandran added.
He was also the voice of labourers and always was in the forefront during their protests.
Kochunni Master, who founded Ernakulam-based Al-Ameen Education Society, gave a lot of importance to the education of backward classes. He was also a member of the Kerala History Association, Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishad and had close ties with renowned writers and poets of his time.
He had launched a drive against liquor abuse. Yogam Anusmarana Samithi chairman V R Krishna Iyer, Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas, Mayor Tony Chammany, Dominic Presentation MLA and GCDA chairman N Venugopal were also present.
