KOCHI: Subid K S from Thrissur is better known for his ‘Ahimsa toys’ made of waste material. With a post-graduate degree in Product Design from IIT, Delhi, he enjoys making toys for children and teaches the art of making them.

“I make simple toys for kids accustomed to use and throw toys. I do not stress on text book education. They will learn a lot when they make it by themselves,” said Subid.

Although there are children as young as four-year olds who learn from Subid, children from classes V to VIII are much more keen on learning them. While whistle, ball and dancing doll attract little ones, it is vehicles that attract the older ones, says Subid.

The toys are made from things we use in our day-to-day lives such as bottle caps, used pen, straws and CDs. The toys are simple and made from tricks he learnt from a website and considers himself only a student. His works are on Facebook andhe  has a page in the name of Ahimsa toys.

An environment and human rights activist, he has been into making such toys since the last three years.

However, he is not willing to be involved in it full time.

“I make the toys because I like doing it and will continue to indulge in it. It is not something that is forced upon me,” he said.
