KOCHI: Kochi is all set to have a scientific collection, segregation and process mechanism for e-waste in the city.
Kochi corporation has decided to consider seriously the proposals submitted by two companies regarding the management of e-waste. The proposals have come from Kothamangalam Service Society and Clean Kerala Company.
An effective policy for e-waste management is a part of Kochi Corporation’s ‘Mission 15-8-15’ campaign. Like any other fastest growing metros in the country, e-waste menace has become a huge headache for Kochi too, said Health Committee chairman T K Ashraf. He said that the proposal includes curbing all kinds of e-wastes, from outdated mobile phones to used optical fibre cables.
Recently, Public Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju had also lauded the civic body’s efforts to curb the menace.
The current proposals include setting up mobile units for collecting e-waste. The corporation will send its men from door-to-door to collect e-wastes and the company will make arrangements for its segregation and processing.
It is learnt that the Corporation Standing Committee for Health has objections on the proposal submitted by Clean Kerala company. The company has asked for land in Brahmapuram and the Committee chairman is against it.
The corporation also plans to open procurement centers to dispose e-waste. It hopes to get necessary funding from Pollution Control Board.
At present, the civic body lacks any safe measure to collect and dispose e-waste. It has no data on the amount of e-waste produced by the city per day. As part of the campaign, it will approach local experts before zooming in on a proposal and discuss with them to identify technologies that suit the city.
