KOCHI: Cocking a snook at the UDF brass in the Kalamassery constituency, the Youth Congress(YC) has decided to stage a protest at the Ernakulam Government Medical College (GMC) on Tuesday without the participation of the local IUML MLA.

Instead of local MLA V K Ebrahim Kunju, the Youth Congress invited Thrikkakara MLA P T Thomas for the protest programme.

According to the Youth Congress leaders, even after three deaths due to alleged medical negligence had been reported at the GMC, the UDF Kalamassery unit, including the local legislator, had remained tight-lipped on the issue.

Besides, they alleged Ebrahim Kunju did not respond even on political issues. When the issue involving CPM area committee member Zakir Hussain became controversial, the local MLA did not take up the issue with the authorities concerned. In fact, it was P T Thomas, MLA who raised the issue in the Assembly which forced  Zakir to surrender before the police.

The YC leaders were peeved at Ebrahim Kunju’s failure to even come out with a news release when innocent lives had been lost at the GMC situated in his home constituency. Interestingly, their ire was also targeted at the Congress local leadership whom they accused of inaction on the issue.

The protest would be staged in front of the GMC main gate around 10am. Besides demanding the ouster of the doctors allegedly responsible for the deaths due to medical negligence, the YC would seek the release of the medical reports pertaining to the deaths.
